بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

2.273

لِلْفُقَرَآءِ الَّذِیْنَ اُحْصِرُوْا فِیْ سَبِیْلِ اللّٰهِ لَا یَسْتَطِیْعُوْنَ ضَرْبًا فِی الْاَرْضِ٘-یَحْسَبُهُمُ الْجَاهِلُ اَغْنِیَآءَ مِنَ التَّعَفُّفِۚ-تَعْرِفُهُمْ بِسِیْمٰىهُمْۚ-لَا یَسْــٴَـلُوْنَ النَّاسَ اِلْحَافًاؕ-وَ مَا تُنْفِقُوْا مِنْ خَیْرٍ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِهٖ عَلِیْمٌ۠ ٛ (273)

Kanz ul Iman Kanz ul Irfan

English translation of Kanz-ul-Imaan

(Spend) on the poor who are restrained in the way of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for the purpose of earning). The ignorant thought that they are wealthy because of them abstaining (from begging); you will recognise them by their faces. They do not beg of people in a persistently self-humiliating manner. And Allah is Aware of whatever you give in charity.

Commentary

This verse was revealed about the Companions of the Bench (a sheltered part of the Masjid for residence). They were approximately 400 companions who had performed the Hijrah (migration) to Madinah. They were homeless, without family, and unmarried Companions who devoted their time to worship and study. By day, they would be engaged in Jihad related matters and by night, they would learn the Quran.
